Elizabeth Kading started five8ths in 2010, with the goal of making high quality, long-lasting clothing that fits well. She aimed to produce the type of clothes that she desired, but which were hard to find – well-made pieces, constructed from high quality materials, and customizable to suit the personality of the wearer.
Elizabeth has a background in costume design for theatre, and holds a degree in fine art. She draws on these skills when designing, drafting, and constructing five8ths clothing. She thinks of each piece as a sculpture which must fit and flatter the body. Over the years, she has refined her drafting and sewing techniques and continues to perfect the process and techniques which are a trademark of five8ths shirts and accessories.
five8ths specializes in bespoke shirt making for men and women. Each shirt is crafted individually in the workshop/showroom at 44 Stanley in Johannesburg, using a unique pattern that is created for each customer based on his or her individual measurements. Clients can choose from a variety of cottons and linens that are made in Italy and Japan, and have a full range of options when choosing collars, cuffs, and all of the other design details that
make their shirt special.
Five8ths also crafts seven-fold neckties, self-tie bowties, and pocket squares out of fine cottons and linens from Italy, Japan and South Africa.
