Cutting the Scouting Menswear Competition

The breakthrough to retail is the most difficult challenge for a start-up designer.

While it is the leaders in fashion design that form the backbone of a country’s fashion industry, it is the up-and-coming designers, with their own way of defining fashion, that are the most exciting.

The Scouting Menswear Competition was launched in 2012 to raise the profile of emerging menswear designers by introducing them to the media and buyers while facilitating their entry into retail.

The 2022 brief challenged designers to develop menswear using hundred percent textile ‘waste’ that would appeal to contemporary lovers of alternative design whilst also demonstrating respect for technical innovation and sustainable fashion circularity. Permissible textiles included textile swatches, end-of-rolls, or damaged textiles, as well as unsold or second-hand clothing.

The winner will be given opportunities worth more than R50 000.00 which include (but not limited to):

·       Showcasing their Autumn | Winter ‘24 collection at SA Fashion Week in October 2023

·       2. R50 000 cash price, a collab range that will be available in selected Mr Price stores in Autumn/Winter 2024, a week spent at HQ to learn about the business

·       A stand at the SAFW Designer Pop-Up (date dependent)

Up to 8 Semi-finalists will be selected and announced after the 25th July.
