The form and silhouette found in this collection was mainly inspired by clothes worn by the Indian Rabari and other Indian attire. The Sesotho word “Mmala” translates as “colour”, making colour a key element in the collection. Botshelo researched colour trends, which she then incorporated into the designs through over-dyeing.
She gravitated towards cotton because of its breathability and its ease of movement. Grateful to have been part of this year’s Edcon Design Innovation Challenge, and confident to start her own business in six years time, she sees herself running a successful fashion label full time, and possibly teaching and mentoring young fashion students aspiring to become successful fashion designers and entrepreneurs.
