Fashion is the language you speak without words
Decoding the style of others and rethinking your own. Have you ever looked at someone and thought:
“They must work in a bank.”
“She’s definitely in fashion.”
“He looks like an architect… or maybe a DJ.”
It’s fascinating how much we assume, and often correctly guess, just by watching the clothes someone wears. Our outfits silently communicate our profession, lifestyle, and sometimes even our personality before we have even spoken a word. This brings me to a question: Do you have a style, an outer identity that people can recognise from a distance?
Social media has nudged many of us into creating a public “persona,” but is that persona authentic? Do you wear the same style when you’re out with friends as you do at work? What about at a jazz festival compared to a friend’s party? From the clothes you choose the make-up you apply (or not), to how you accessorise and style your hair everything sends a message. Fashion often acts as a stand-in for language, which is why it is important to make sure your “visual message” is not misunderstood. Of course, we can misread too, that sharply dressed “bank manager” might actually be an influencer.
And here is the best part: when you choose to buy from a South African designer whose style you identify with, you’re halfway to crafting a true and consistent personal brand. Your wardrobe then becomes more than clothing - it becomes your story. A story you can shape and reshape as you go, growing through your fantastical life.
