Athenkosi Takuta graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a Bachelor of Arts in fashion design in 2022. Whilst completing his studies he interned with the acclaimed designer, Bongiwe Walaza, where he subsequently became an assistant designer.

Currently based in Kempton Park on the East Rand, Takuta was born and raised in Gqeberha where his love of fashion first began at the early age of eight, when he would cut up his own clothing to make mini collections for his sister’s dolls.

Established in 2018, Artae is a genderless and ready-to-wear, contemporary clothing brand with sustainable design practises and exquisite craftsmanship. The brand incorporates couture design elements with tailoring techniques, to achieve a timeless aesthetic with garments for the brave who are prepared to challenge binary norms.
