ABOUT

Ipantsula is a collaboration between Kabelo Legodi and Sthembiso Mchunu, which fuses styles from one of South Africa’s biggest sub-cultures called Isipantsula, a culture which comes from the townships during the apartheid era. It was very popular amongst the youth, and it included unique dance moves, kwaito music and sporty, yet semi-formal dress code.

The brand aims to tell the story of the Ipantsula with street savvy designs incorporating sustainable design principles, such as appliqué, to enhance base cloth as well as eco-friendly fabrication. Wanting to recapture some of the allure of that Ipantsula era and the styles they grew up with – “wanting to belong in the hood” – they fused the pantsula culture and street soccer to create an authentic street wear collection which features various elements of the two.
