Limpopo-born Irene Makhavhu has built her label through talent, persistence and an understanding of the women she dresses.  A Durban University of Technology graduate, she began her career supplying childrenswear to a retailer before gaining experience across styling and production.  In 2015, she launched Irene Makhavhu Designs, developing a loyal clientele through bridalwear, fashion and ready-to-wear defined by sophisticated simplicity, individuality and craftsmanship. Today, the Johannesburg-based label is available through The Space’s eight boutiques and Big Blue stores nationwide – a retail journey for an independent designer. After stealing the spotlight last season with a chic and elegant collection, Makhavhu returns to South African Fashion Week with AW27 collection Tshedza, meaning “light”. The title reflects both illumination and forward movement: a designer becoming increasingly visible while remaining rooted in intention. Every piece is created to feel personal, refined and unforgettable, carrying the confidence of a woman whose journey continues to gather momentum.
