RUBICON
RUBICON
“Timeless African Elegance, Rooted in Heritage”
ABOUT
Visionary designer Hangwani Nengovhela founded Rubicon in 2002 with the goal of dressing self-assured, sophisticated African woman. Hangwani's entrepreneurial spirit, artistic intuition, and Venda heritage served as a compass for her fashion career. She forged her career through passion, commitment, and an unwavering quest for perfection. Rubicon’s debut at South African Fashion Week, in 2005, marked a turning point, establishing it as a symbol of feminine sophistication and African luxury.
With 23 years as one of South Africa’s leading fashion houses, Rubicon has expanded its presence from a boutique fashion house into an internationally recognised label. Their work has been showcased on runways in fashion capitals including Paris, London, Italy, Jakarta (Indonesia), Nigeria, Ireland, Switzerland, Tanzania, and Mozambique, celebrating African elegance on the world stage.
Rubicon has also been honoured with prestigious accolades that reflect their contribution to fashion and culture, including the Mbokodo Award for Women in the Arts (2015) and the Fiasa Designer of the Year Award (2023).
Hangwani finds inspiration in the diverse experiences of women, African landscapes, and her Venda heritage. Her collections create timeless yet contemporary clothing by skilfully fusing global sensibilities with clean African silhouettes. Her vision is centred on a celebration of heritage, femininity, and understated luxury, with a particular focus on inclusivity and sustainability. Rubicon is a story of African pride, tenacity, and grace in addition to being a fashion brand.
