ABOUT
Born in the Kaap. Made in Jozi. Rooted in the creative landscapes of Cape Town and Johannesburg, Jason Kiruban Soomar’s Autumn/Winter 2027 collection explores the intersection of timeless luxury, cultural identity and individual expression. Inspired by architecture, art and the diverse cultural influences that have shaped his journey, Jason reimagines denim - a fabric he has been drawn to since childhood - as a medium for sculptural design and contemporary craftsmanship.
With over a decade of experience in garment manufacturing and construction, his approach is instinctive and hands-on. Rather than beginning with conventional sketches, he often works directly with the fabric, cutting, shaping and developing silhouettes through an intuitive creative process that allows each garment to evolve organically. Monotone stitching, considered details and distinctive silhouettes place craftsmanship at the heart of the collection. The forms speak from a distance, while the finer details reveal themselves up close - rewarding those who look beyond the surface.
Subtle references to South Africa’s cultural diversity emerge through layering, patchwork and the interplay of contrasting influences, bringing together heritage and modernity in unexpected ways. Ultimately, this collection is an invitation to embrace individuality. Designed for those who are courageous in their self-expression and confident in who they are, it celebrates the freedom to dress beyond convention. For Sumo Atelier, denim is more than a timeless fabric. It is a canvas for identity, a study in craftsmanship and an expression of art without boundaries.
