Pierre Cardin Brings the PCYDA to South Africa for the First Time
Maison Pierre Cardin is proud to announce the first South African edition of the Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award (PCYDA) in collaboration with South Africa Fashion Week directed by Lucilla Booyzen, taking place in Johannesburg from 19 to 21 October 2026. The three-day event will culminate in the Pierre Cardin Fashion Show, featuring an exclusive selection of the House's latest creations. The presentation will mark Pierre Cardin's first-ever runway show in South Africa under the artistic direction of Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, President and Artistic Director of Pierre Cardin.
A longstanding relationship between Pierre Cardin and South Africa
The relationship between Pierre Cardin and South Africa spans more than three decades. The House has maintained a presence in the country for over 30 years, reflecting the strength and enduring nature of its connection with the South African market. In September 1995, Pierre Cardin personally met Nelson Mandela, then President of the Republic of South Africa - a symbolic encounter that reflected the special relationship the designer had developed with the country and its history. Today, Maison Pierre Cardin is proud to renew and strengthen these ties by bringing the Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award to South Africa for the first time, opening its doors to the country’s emerging generation of creative talent.
Created in 2022, Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award is an international initiative dedicated to discovering, mentoring and promoting the next generation of fashion designers. Inspired by Pierre Cardin's pioneering vision - where fashion, architecture, technology and innovation intersect - the competition reflects the House's enduring commitment to nurturing emerging creative talent. Under the leadership of Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, this legacy continues to evolve by encouraging young designers to develop bold, forward-thinking and sustainable approaches to fashion.
Since its launch, the competition has expanded across Europe, Asia, the United States and the Middle East, creating opportunities for emerging talents to connect with one of the world's most influential fashion houses. More than 170 young designers have participated in its international editions, with over 17 finalists awarded paid internships at the Pierre Cardin Design Studio in Paris. Since 2025, additional distinctions, including the Creativity Award and the Potential Award, have further recognized exceptional talent.
More than a competition, Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award offers an immersive platform where education, creativity and professional mentorship converge. It enables young designers to engage directly with industry leaders, gain invaluable professional insight and become part of Pierre Cardin's enduring creative legacy.
The South African edition will start on Monday, 19 October 2026 with an exclusive workshop in Johannesburg, where fashion students will meet Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin and the Pierre Cardin design team. Throughout the day, they will present their creative projects, benefit from professional mentorship, and engage in discussions on innovation, creativity and the future of fashion.
The competition will conclude on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, at The Forum Hyde Park, Johannesburg, with the Pierre Cardin Fashion Show, showcasing an exclusive selection of the House's latest creations. The evening will also host the Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award Final, during which the finalists will present their collections before the distinguished jury, culminating in the announcement of the competition's winning designer.
