TWO WORLDS, INFINITE MOVEMENT: SAFW BRINGS ART AND SPORT TO THE AW27 RUNWAY

Joburg Ballet dances a Black Coffee collection, and Field to Fashion brings the ball to the runway.

Johannesburg, October 2026 - South African Fashion Week will stage two first-time collaborations at its AW27 Collections, bringing dance and sport onto the same runway as the country’s leading designers.

In the first, Black Coffee and Joburg Ballet share a stage for the first time. In the second, Field to Fashion, leading stylists and South African designers bring the language of sport to the runway. Both are firsts for the platform, and both rest on the same idea: fashion is already built into sport and culture. It is in what players wear arriving at the stadium and leaving it, in what dancers wear on stage and what audiences wear to watch them, in the terraces and the foyer alike. SAFW is putting that on the runway and giving it designers’ names.

“We want to bring art and sport to the SAFW runway because fashion connects with both. Together, they give us an opportunity to tell South African stories and show our designers’ work in a different way. These collaborations allow our designers to broaden their reach, engage new audiences, create content and attract media attention. We want these connections to lead to more interest in South African design, more sales and growth for our designers’ businesses.” Says Lucilla Booyzen, Founder, South African Fashion Week

On 22 October, Black Coffee and Joburg Ballet take to the runway together, bringing fashion and dance into a bold new conversation.

The latest collection by Jacques van der Watt comes alive through the bodies of Joburg Ballet’s artists, in a performance conceived and choreographed by Naledi Award-winning choreographer and Joburg Ballet soloist Chloé Blair. The runway becomes a stage, the garment becomes movement, and the dancer becomes both performer and muse.

Black Coffee’s distinctive language of form, structure and silhouette meets the precision, strength and fluidity of ballet. Every line, gesture and shape becomes part of the design, creating a living dialogue between the architecture of the garment and the architecture of the body.

The collaboration marks Joburg Ballet’s debut at SA Fashion Week, in the company’s 25th anniversary year.

“This is more than a runway. It is an invitation to see ballet differently and to experience dance through the lens of fashion, and fashion through the body in motion. We are proud to the extraordinary SA Fashion Week team in celebrating the imagination and creative spirit of South Africa. Art has no single language. Fashion, photography and movement offer different ways of seeing and understanding the human body: its identity, its culture, its power and its possibility.” Says Dane Hurst Artistic Director of Joburg Ballet

In the penultimate show of the season on 24 October, SAFW brings the ball to the runway with Field to Fashion.

Sport has always dressed itself. The arrival, the tunnel walk, the post-match interview and the stands have become stages of their own, and what gets worn on them shapes how South Africans dress far beyond the ninety minutes. Field to Fashion takes that instinct and hands it to South African designers, with leading stylists creating individual looks that carry personal style off the field.

Both collaborations sit inside SAFW’s wider purpose: moving South African designers towards sustainable businesses.

From the field to fashion, and from fashion to a world of opportunity.

NOTES TO EDITORS:
